The Decadent Flavors Of A Boston Cream Donut…In Your Coffee Cup

5 min read MAY 29, 2023

Smooth, velvety vanilla custard oozes out the side of the light, airy pastry filling your mouth with the delicate, creamy confection while rich, sweet chocolate icing grazes the bottom of your upper lip as you slowly take a bite of this long-time classic pie turned donut.

Ah, yes, the Boston cream donut!

There are many things about this confection that contribute to its popularity, some are team vanilla custard filling (it’s me, I’m team vanilla custard filling), and some prefer the sweet layer of chocolate frosting that rests atop this Bostonian masterpiece.

But, while there may be a variety of reasons why we all love a fresh Boston cream donut, there’s likely no variation of answers when it comes to this question: what beverage pairs perfectly with this confection?

I suppose we can all answer in unison now…coffee! Of course!

So then, what would make a better marriage of flavors than our clean, single origin, beloved medium roasted coffee and the smooth vanilla, rich chocolate, and light airy pastry flavors typical of a Boston Cream Donut?

Lifeboost Boston Cream Donut Coffee combines these confectionery tastes using natural oils and extracts leaving you with a delicious cup that tastes like grandma’s been slaving all morning in the kitchen, but without the caloric load that typically comes with such baking labors of love.

So naturally, enjoying this brew black, as-is, is wonderful.

And, even adding a splash of non-dairy milk with a bit of stevia is delightful.

Of course, my personal favorite, a touch of heavy cream added to this selection, cold-brewed, over ice, is also fantastic.

But, today we’re sharing a few ways to take these decadent flavors over the top, keeping with the true nature of a rich, sweet Boston Cream Donut and crafting beverages that double as desserts for those times when you just want a little something extra.

However, before sharing those more detailed recipes, here’s a quick, simple recipe for those looking for a daily way to enjoy our Boston Cream Donut Coffee without expanding your waistline: simply add 8 ounces of freshly brewed Lifeboost Boston Cream Donut Coffee to your favorite mug. Then, add a touch of your favorite milk and about a ½ teaspoon of pure vanilla extract. Stir, then top with a dusting of cocoa powder, and enjoy!

Now for a few treats Boston Cream Donut fans will truly enjoy…

Boston Cream Decadence

This recipe takes a little bit of effort, but trust me, the decadent, dessert-like, delicious treat you’ll be savoring is overwhelmingly worth the extra bit of work!

The homemade vanilla custard infused whipped cream and the thick, sweet chocolate sauce perfectly amplifies the rich and velvety vanilla extracts and pure, silky, chocolate flavors in our Boston Cream Donut Coffee, taking your ordinary cup to new heights.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces strongly brewed, and chilled, Lifeboost Boston Cream Donut Coffee
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon cane sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • ½ tablespoon flour (or arrowroot powder for a gluten free option)
  • ½ cup heavy whipping cream
  • 8 ounces milk + 4 ounces milk
  • 2 teaspoons chocolate syrup, plus extra for topping

Instructions

    • Add egg yolk, sugar, and flour to a small saucepan and whisk until combined.

    • Pour in 4 ounces of milk and vanilla, then stir again to combine.

    • Heat over medium heat, stirring continually, until thick. This will begin to bubble and be the consistency of a thick custard.

    • Once thickened, remove from heat and allow the custard to cool.

    • Add heavy whipping cream to a small bowl and mix with a hand mixer until thick. (Note: In my experience, especially since you’ll be incorporating the custard into this cream in the next step, you want to make sure not to over whip the cream. In other words, you’re looking for a thick cream, but you’ll want to stop mixing just as, or before, soft peaks begin to form.)

    • Add the vanilla custard to the whipped heavy cream and incorporate gently with a spatula.

    • Add ice to a tall glass and pour the other 8 ounces of milk over the ice.

    • Add chocolate syrup to the milk and stir to combine.

    • Now, add strongly brewed, chilled coffee to the milk mixture. (Personally, I like the separation of flavors when crafting a coffee drink, so I often omit stirring such ingredients into my coffee, but you can certainly stir here if you’d prefer.)

  • Top with 2-3 spoonfuls of vanilla custard infused whipped cream, then drizzle a bit of chocolate syrup on top. Enjoy!

If you’re looking for a healthier alternative to store bought chocolate syrup, I highly recommend this simple, two ingredient, chocolate sauce/syrup!

2 Ingredient Vegan Chocolate Syrup

  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

Add maple syrup and cocoa powder to a bowl and mix until well combined. (For me, this did take a bit of stirring to get it to a smooth consistency.)
This can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

The Bostonian

A cocktail using Boston Cream Donut Coffee? Yes, please!

Inspired by a classic White Russian, this cocktail includes Kahlua, vodka, and heavy cream. But, the added vanilla and chocolate flavors of the Boston Cream Donut Coffee truly set this apart, placing it in a category of its own.

To highlight the natural flavors in this coffee selection, we’ve tweaked the White Russian base here to include pure vanilla extract, crème de cocoa, and a bit of chocolate syrup.

And, of course we felt these tweaks warranted the need for a new name for this delightfully boozy brew, therefore, we like to call this cocktail the Bostonian.

Though, I suppose I’d also call this a delicious way to enjoy a warm spring evening on my patio!

Note: You’ll notice below that we’ve recommended cold brewing your coffee for this recipe. You can definitely brew and chill your coffee here too, but I’d highly recommend cold brewing as it produces a smoother, stronger brew, which pairs well with the alcohol in this drink.

If you do decide to brew and chill, just plan to make your brew a bit stronger than usual.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces cold brewed Lifeboost Boston Cream Donut Coffee
  • 1 ounces vodka
  • 1 ounce Kahlua
  • 1 ounce creme de cocoa
  • 1 ounce heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon chocolate syrup
  • Ice

Instructions

    • Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until well blended or until the outside of the shaker begins to frost. *Personally, I think this is better when shaken a bit longer (allowing the shaker to frost) as it produces a nice and frothy consistency.

  • Add ice to a medium-sized glass, pour the shaken cocktail over the ice, and enjoy!
