It’s the most wonderful time of the year…

No, not because of the kids jingle bell-ing and everyone telling you ‘be of good cheer’…”

It’s the most wonderful time of the year because it’s time for eggnog…or better yet, eggnog coffee!!

I know, eggnog can be a divided subject - and I’ll further admit, I’m a fairly new convert (I can’t wait to share with you the recipe that forever changed my holiday coffee enjoyment!) - but this cup is purely magical for many.

Creamy, spicy, a little boozy sometimes, and a lot delicious every time…eggnog and coffee are a match made in winter heaven.

That’s why we’re so excited to share this collection of ‘nog inspired coffee creations, including a stand-alone classic eggnog recipe, of course.

So, let’s turn up the holiday tunes and move on into the kitchen - because the sooner we start stirring, the sooner we’ll get to sip!

5 Eggnog Coffee Classics To Truly Make This The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

Eggnog is often said to be one of the most polarizing holiday treats, a cup that divides households year in and year out.

Your dad can’t go a single holiday season without making a triple batch of his homemade ‘nog, yet your mother has never, and will never, touch the stuff (or so she says).

Your aunt brings out her crystal punch bowl and moose mugs around the holidays each year for one reason alone…to serve her rich, creamy, sweet, slightly spicy, and very boozy eggnog.

And, all the while your uncle complains about that punch bowl of “nothing more than melted vanilla ice cream” each and every season.

It definitely seems that eggnog brings out very strong opinions in folks.

Some love it, finding the thick, velvety texture and rich sweetness hard to resist, and others simply can’t fathom the thought of sipping a mixture made largely of eggs.

I’ll admit, I was in the hard pass crowd for many years, until I tried two things:

  • a dairy free eggnog that’s very spice-forward, and frankly the yummiest cup of holiday goodness I’ve ever tasted. (Yes, we’re absolutely sharing that one today!)
  • adding eggnog to coffee!!

Ah yes, one sip and I was hooked.

In fact, since trying this creamy combination, it’s something I look forward to every year.

For all you pros out there, those of you who’ve been adding eggnog to your holiday cup of joe for years now, you’re the real MVPs, because this match was made in holiday heaven.

Most of us aren’t strangers to searching for the perfect touch of creamy sweetness to add to our brew, especially when seeking a little something extra to enjoy for special occasions.

And, this is likely what has prompted many to enjoy a splash of eggnog in their cup (coffee cup, that is).

But, there’s so much more you can do with this duo…so, let’s get started.

1- Hug In A Mug

This cup is what converted me to eggnog, transforming me from a never ‘nogger to a coffee and eggnog combo fanatic.

In fact, I’ve even tried this eggnog recipe (1) in a strong black tea as well, and it didn’t disappoint.

But, with our Eggnog Latte Coffee…well, I simply can’t recommend it enough!
With notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cream, and even a hint of rum, this coffee already whispers sweet ‘noggings…I mean sweet nothings…in your mind’s ear, but when you pair it with a light yet creamy, spicy, and naturally sweetened homemade eggnog - ah, chef’s kiss just doesn’t cut it.

The warmth greets you then grabs you gently, it’s truly like a hug in a mug.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces freshly brewed Lifeboost Eggnog Latte Coffee
  • ½ cup homemade dairy free eggnog (see recipe below)
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon raw honey (optional)
  • Pinch of nutmeg, for topping

Instructions

  • Add freshly brewed coffee, vanilla extract, and honey (if using) to a large mug, stirring gently to combine.
  • Add ½ cup eggnog to an electric frother and froth on the heated setting.
  • Pour warm, frothed eggnog over prepared coffee.
  • Top with a pinch of nutmeg, and enjoy!

Bonus - You can also easily enjoy this one over ice! To do so…

  • Add 8 ounces cold brewed Lifeboost Eggnog Latte Coffee and ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract to a tall glass with ice, stirring gently to combine.
  • If you want your base to be slightly sweetened, you can also add 1 teaspoon of honey, and stir until combined.
  • Add ½ cup homemade dairy free eggnog to an electric frother and froth on the cold setting.
  • Top cold brew with frothed eggnog, dust with a dash of nutmeg, and enjoy!

Homemade Dairy Free Eggnog

  • 4 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 6 egg yolks
  • ⅔ cup raw honey
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

In a blender, add eggs, almond milk, honey, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

Blend for roughly one minute or until smooth (This will cause the mixture to froth up quite a bit, and that’s okay. You can strain a bit of the foam that might remain after cooking if you’d like.)

Pour mixture into a saucepan, add cloves, and heat over low-medium heat.

Cook for 10-15 minutes, paying very close and careful attention so the eggs cook slowly (otherwise you’ll end up with scrambled eggs in your eggnog).

The mixture should be hot, but not simmering or boiling. If the mixture begins to boil, whisk vigorously, then remove from the heat for a moment.

Once slightly thickened, and after the mixture has cooked for 10-15 minutes, remove the eggnog from the heat, allow it to cool slightly, then add the vanilla extract.

Once cooled, strain through a fine mesh strainer to remove the whole cloves and any remaining foam.

Transfer to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator. Chill at least 8 hours before using.

2- Eggnog Coffee Punch

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is a holiday movie favorite for many.

And, while this classic is filled with scenes and one-liners that lots of folks can easily recall for a good laugh, the Cousin Eddy and Clark Griswold discourse shared over a couple of moose mugs repeatedly filled from a large punch bowl of eggnog stands out as a memorable one for sure.

Though sometimes I wonder…if that punch bowl had been infused with Lifeboost Eggnog Latte Coffee, could Clark have more easily tolerated Cousin Eddy’s antics?

Sigh…the world may never know.

Ah, but your next holiday gathering could certainly be enhanced by such a creation, a punch bowl filled with eggnog, eggnog coffee, and even an extra source of creamy sweetness through the addition of ice cream. Yum!

*This recipe (2) calls for cappuccino or coffee ice cream, but feel free to use vanilla ice cream or gelato as an equally yummy alternative.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces cold brewed Lifeboost Eggnog Latte Coffee (concentrate or undiluted cold brew is best)
  • ½ gallon store bought eggnog
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 4-5 cups coffee or cappuccino ice cream
  • Whipped cream, optional for topping
  • Nutmeg, optional for topping

Instructions

  • Add cold brew, brown sugar, eggnog, and nutmeg to a blender, and blend until the brown sugar dissolves.
  • Cover and chill for at least one hour.
  • Pour coffee and eggnog mixture into a punch bowl, add ice cream by the scoop, stirring gently to combine.
  • Serve in small glasses topped with whipped cream and a pinch of nutmeg, if desired. Enjoy!

3- Fa La La La Latte

This twist on a classic eggnog latte (3) tames down the ‘nog intensity with the addition of a little extra milk (dairy or non dairy, totally up to you).

With this addition, your mug still greets you with those classic holiday tastes expected in an eggnog latte, but here you’ll get a little less custard, and a lot more coffee, a little less nog, and a lot more nostalgia whisking your taste buds away to a small cafe, a warmly lit room, a cozy chair, and a cup that’s calling your name.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces freshly brewed Lifeboost Eggnog Latte Coffee
  • ⅓ cup milk (2% is great here, but feel free to use what you like best)
  • ⅔ cup eggnog
  • Pinch of nutmeg

Instructions

  • Add milk and eggnog to a small saucepan and heat slowly over low heat until the mixture is warmed through. Be sure to stir continually to avoid scorching.
  • While the milk and eggnog mixture is warming, brew eggnog latte coffee and pour into a large mug.
  • Once the milk and eggnog mixture is warmed through, gently froth with a handheld frother.
  • Top hot coffee with the frothed eggnog mixture, dust with a pinch of nutmeg, and enjoy!

**If you have an espresso machine with a steaming wand, you can alternatively steam the milk and eggnog mixture instead of warming on the stovetop and frothing.

4- Eggnog On Ice

Raise your hand if you enjoy iced coffee year round.

Some folks could drink a hot cup in the blistering July heat, while others could sip on a chilly brew amidst the blustery winds of winter…such is the wonder of coffee.

Ah, and when you combine the wonder of coffee with the wonder of winter, I do believe this is the precise intersection at which you’ll find a creamy, delicious iced eggnog latte.

This recipe (4) checks all the iced coffee loving boxes - great coffee, warm spices, creamy sweetness…what’s not to love?

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces cold brewed Lifeboost Eggnog Latte Coffee
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 4 ounces eggnog
  • 2 ounces milk
  • Whipped cream, for topping
  • Freshly grated nutmeg, for topping
  • ice

Instructions

  • Whisk together cold brew and brown sugar vigorously to help the sugar dissolve, then add to a tall glass with ice.
  • Stir together eggnog and milk, then pour over sweetened coffee.
  • Top with whipped cream and freshly grated nutmeg, if desired, and enjoy!

5- Merry Moose Head

I know what you’re thinking - thus far, these recipes have been lacking the boozy element commonly expected with a creamy glass of eggnog.
You’re right, we’ve been holding back, so if you typically enjoy a little rum with your ‘nog, this one’s for you.

While you can certainly add a touch of dark rum, brandy, or bourbon/whiskey to any of the above listed recipes, as these are typically considered the best eggnog companions (5), this eggnog martini (6) features coffee liqueur and rum, highlighting both the coffee component as well as the warming notes in this drink.

Ingredients

  • 1-ounce cold brewed Lifeboost Eggnog Latte Coffee
  • 1-ounce dark rum
  • 1 ounce Kahlua or coffee liqueur
  • 3 ounces eggnog
  • ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice.
  • Shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker frosts (at least 15-30 seconds).
  • Strain into a coupe glass and top with an extra pinch of nutmeg. Enjoy!

Bonus: Classic Eggnog

We shared a dairy free eggnog recipe in the first listing of this eggnog coffee collection, but if you’re looking for a more traditional option, this one’s (7) for you.

Thick, creamy, and mildly spiced, this one’s perfect for use in any of the recipes we’ve shared today or as your new go-to ‘nog for the season.

Ingredients

  • 6 large egg yolks
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 cups milk
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Whisk egg yolks and sugar together in a medium bowl until light and creamy.
  • In a saucepan over medium-high heat, combine the cream, milk, nutmeg, and salt.
  • Stir often until the mixture reaches just below a simmer.
  • Add a large spoonful of the heated milk mixture to the egg mixture, whisking vigorously.
  • Repeat adding a spoonful at a time to temper the eggs.
  • Once most of the hot milk mixture has been added to the eggs, pour the mixture back into the saucepan on the stovetop.
  • Whisk constantly for a minute or so until the mixture has slightly thickened or until it reaches about 160 degrees fahrenheit on a thermometer. (It will thicken more as it cools.)
  • Remove from the heat, then stir in the vanilla.
  • Pour the eggnog through a fine mesh strainer into a pitcher or jar, then refrigerate until chilled.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to a week.

*If you’d like a thinner consistency, you can add the entire mixture, including a few additional tablespoons of milk, to a blender and blend until smooth.

*If adding alcohol to the eggnog, you can incorporate this once cooled or when you add the vanilla.

FAQ

1- Are there any other seasonal coffee recipes you could recommend?

Absolutely!

Eggnog isn’t for everyone, and for others, it’s the tip of the seasonal coffee iceberg, leading inquiring tastebuds searching for more.

So, if you’re looking for some exceptional seasonal sips, here’s a collection of 10 holiday coffee cocktail recipes, or you might enjoy this collection of seasonal coffee recipe samples pulled from our coffee recipe ebooks.

2- Does the type of coffee you use in recipes really matter?

Just as the type of water you use when brewing makes a big difference in the final taste of your java, we certainly believe the quality of coffee you use in recipes makes all the difference in taste and experience.

Of course, this is why you’ll find Lifeboost Coffee selections listed for each of the recipes above.

And, we recommend these selections with confidence, as Lifeboost Coffee is:

  • Specialty grade
  • Certified USDA organic
  • Shade and elevation grown
  • Low acid
  • Sustainably grown
  • Third party tested for mold, mycotoxins, heavy metals, and 450+ other toxins
  • Small batch roasted for optimal freshness

3- What are some common misconceptions about the safety of eggnog for consumption?

Some folks believe alcohol kills any bacteria in eggnog even when the eggs are raw, but most experts dispel this notion, advising against it (8).

Some people also believe that adding eggnog (made with raw eggs) to hot coffee kills any bacteria present, but experts advise against this as well since these temperatures wouldn’t be hot enough to kill any harmful bacteria that could remain in raw eggs (8).

For safe eggnog consumption, it’s generally recommended to begin with a cooked egg base (8), and this is why we’ve chosen this method for each of the recipes included in the collection above.
