Is Your Coffee Truly “Organic”?
Not all organic coffee is created equal. And some aren’t even organic at all. In the United States, there are 4 classifications of organic: 100% Organic USDA Certified is the highest grade of organic certification. To qualify for this certification, the coffee needs to be grown, processed and handled with 100% all-organic ingredients. Organic USDA Certified is the next tier of organic certification. On this tier, the coffee needs to be made with at least 95% organic ingredients. Made With Organic Ingredients is the second lowest tier. This isn’t certified by USDA but indicates that at leatst 70% of the ingredients are certified organic. Organic Ingredients is the absolute lowest tier. This has no certification requirements. And your coffee may contain GMOs, synthetic compounds and potentially harmful chemicals may be used during handling and processing. So when buying coffee, it’s important to make sure that the brand is USDA Certified. That’s the only tier that guarantees that you are actually getting an organic product, not just one with dishonest marketing full of potentially harmful ingredients.
Is Your Coffee Third-Party Tested?
Unfortunately, being USDA Certified is not quite enough alone. There are certain loopholes in the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 that coffee growers use to grow “organic” coffee with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Plus, the USDA allows private individuals and companies to become certifying agents. Which lets other parties certify brands as “organic” without government oversight. This means that you could be drinking a USDA Certified Organic coffee that still uses chemical fertilizers and pesticides! Yuck… The USDA Certified label filters out most coffee brands. For the brands that are left, you want coffee that also performs independent 3rd party testing for contaminants to ensure the product is completely safe to drink. This includes scans for mycotoxins, pesticides, heavy metals, and more.
Is Your Coffee Grown At High Altitudes?
Many coffee brands claim they have high quality beans. But the only true ‘high quality’ coffee beans are grown at high elevations.
At high altitudes, cooler mountain temperatures slow down the growth of the coffee beans.
This additional time imbues the coffee bean with more complex sugars, creating richer and more compelling flavors.
The altitude also helps water drainage, letting the flavors become more concentrated instead of watered down.
And the biggest thing: it helps prevent growth of mold.

Single-origin coffee means the coffee brand sources their beans from one place. By doing this, these farmers have more negotiating power since the brand’s quality and reputation depends solely on them.
The coffee brand also benefits by getting a more consistent product, which gives you a reliable and delicious taste every time.
