The ceramic bowl rests on the kitchen island. As the daughters get to work piling ingredients, measuring spoons and cups, whisks, and spoons nearby, their mother places a pot on the front burner of the stovetop.
The coffee pot gurgles slightly, its work nearly finished as the women's work is beginning.
The daughters each grab a mug from the cupboard. June grabs two mugs, one for her and one for mom.
"Is that enough cream, mom?" June asks. The rich, smooth, hot coffee marbles with the addition of the cool, thick heavy cream. "That's perfect, dear."
"Mmmm, mom you've always made the best coffee," a sentiment openly shared by all five daughters present.
Her wrinkled skin folds a bit more as a humble smile appears on their mother's face.
"Well now, we'd better get busy," their mother replies, her smile slightly fading.
Milk chocolate covered caramels, a difficult, but delicious endeavor.
The recipe had been passed down for 4 generations. The handwriting of June's great, great grandmother was a precious sight each of the girls looked forward to seeing each year when they gathered to create the confectionary delicacy.
"How long have we been doing this?", Julie asked.
"For as long as I can remember," replied Jennifer.
"And, for as long as I can remember even before you girls were born as well," their mother recalled.
The heavy cream and sugars combined on the stovetop, the heat from the cooking process filling the room.
"This candy is so finicky, it can burn with just the slightest mishap...like you Jenn," June teased.
As the matriarch spoke, the laughter ceased...
"Making candy is a delicate process. It reminds us of life. If we put in the work, if we're patient, careful, and attentive, truly wonderful things can happen."
As she spoke, she proceeded to carefully cut a cooled piece of caramel. Lifting it with a small fork, she dipped the firm, rich confection into a creamy, soft bath of melted milk chocolate.
The chocolate still slightly dripping from the caramel, she rested the piece on a wire rack to set.
After a few pieces of caramel were dipped and placed on the rack, she grabbed the first piece, the chocolate not quite set yet, and indulged.
The daughters smilingly watched as their mother reached for her still-warm mug of cream-infused java, adding to the decadence of the chocolatey caramels a welcomed, warm sip of smooth, bold coffee.
"What are you waiting for girls, those caramels aren't going to dip themselves, you'd better get busy," she smiled.
Delicious, chocolate-covered caramels, creamy, bold coffee, tradition, and time spent with family...true indulgence.

I have a big sweet tooth. When I'm looking for something to satisfy this craving during the day or after a meal, I make a cup of Lifeboost's Specialty Flavored Coffee and add a couple tablespoons of heavy whipping cream.
You have one of the most delicious healthy treats on the planet.
It's quite possibly heaven in a cup"
