The days are long and the hours of labor are often difficult, but life as a distiller is rewarding.
Alex wakes at 4:30 each morning. Before he drives through the lush greenery lining the roads of his Pocono mountain home, he pours a freshly brewed, piping hot cup of his favorite medium roast coffee.
He appreciates the aromas and flavors, his work at the distillery fresh on his mind, knowing the attention to detail required to create exceptionality. Before the golden sun peeks over the horizon, his coffee mug now empty, Alex is already at the distillery.
Every detail matters when crafting such high end spirits: weight, grain, time, yeast, and temperature are only a few of the measures that must be closely monitored.
For a single malt, barley is used, which means Alex will spend his morning loading malted barley into a mash tun where it will be steeped in water and prepared for fermentation.
While waiting for the sugars to be extracted, he spends the bulk of today cleaning lines and tanks to ensure a clean facility, avoiding contamination.
His colleagues monitor the progress of the batch, specifically the yeast, while collecting measurements and recording information regarding alcohol content. Each step in the meticulous process is equally important as brewing spirits is truly an art.
From the selection of the grains in the initial steps to choosing the type of wood for the barrels where the whiskey will age, from cooking to fermenting, from distilling to aging, thousands of days and countless hours of hard work are a necessary component of a truly magnificent barrel of whiskey.
Once those barrels are used, the flavor still lingers and Lifeboost’s signature medium roast low acid coffee beans are placed and carefully aged in the barrel for 30-45 days. Just long enough to infuse the flavors of the whiskey and barrel into the beans but not long enough for mold to start growing.
Alex delights in knowing the final product will be shared amongst friends, served in celebration, and enjoyed in relaxation.
As he sips his late afternoon cup of coffee, he breathes in the bold aromas and thinks of the process that must also be meticulously carried out for this brew, from hand picked coffee cherries, to spring water washing, to perfected roasting processes, and finally to his mug, where he sips amongst friends in celebration and alone in relaxation.
Premium coffee cherries, harvested at peak ripeness high in the mountains of Nicaragua, are meticulously processed and then aged for 30-45 days in charred whiskey barrels from a craft distillery deep in the Poconos mountains.
The high end spirits have caused the pores of the wood to open, now allowing the green coffee beans to be infused with the flavors of fine whiskey.
The coffee beans are then roasted to perfection, burning off any remaining alcohol and leaving behind the natural flavors of oaky smoke and slight sweetness for a complex, exquisite coffee.
