Boiling water fills the thermos and rests against its inner walls, priming the container for its awaited contents of freshly brewed, deliciously bold, piping hot coffee.
After the preparations for the morning ahead are made, he grabs his lunch and thermos filled with his favorite brew and heads out the door.
The long road is bumpy on the way to the fields. The dust billows up from the road beneath the tires of the truck.
The fields are painted with light purple colored flowers that can be seen all the way to the horizon’s edge.
To the right of the fields, white square shaped boxes line the edge of the woods, bee hives surrounded on one side by a blanket of forest trees and a canvas of purple on the other.
He parks his truck a little farther down the road and enjoys a small cup of hot, delicious coffee before strolling through the fragrant lavender fields, collecting small bundles of the flowers to take home for a bit of personal enjoyment.
The floral bushel now rests in the front seat of the truck, awaiting its sweet companion to come.
Arriving at the hive, his leathered hands carefully lift the lid, then slowly apply the smoke.
As the bees calm, he collects sweet, golden honey from the frame, now nearly overflowing.
By lunchtime, the grounds have been checked, the honey collected, and the lavender carefully plucked to bring home to his lovely wife, where this afternoon, she’ll work a magic of her own in the kitchen.
She carefully selects the brightly hued, unopened, purple lavender buds to add to her pan of water and freshly collected honey. As the syrup simmers, the whole house is enveloped in a calming, floral fragrance.
The chairs make a scuffing sound on the wood floor as the couple comes together at the table to take a seat.
She slowly pours fresh, hot coffee into two mugs, the one with a small chip is hers, a bit of sentimentality to be enjoyed with each sip.
He dips a small spoon into the freshly made honey lavender syrup and smiles as the sweet, fragrant confection drips into the warm java, a reward from his labor in the fields and her work in the kitchen.
After he gives a gentle stir to the contents of each cup, she brings a saucepan of warmed milk from the stovetop and rests it on a pad on the table.
While he dots his brew with only a few spoonfuls of the steaming, warmed milk, she prefers a larger spoon, transforming her field-sweetened coffee into a sweet and creamy, delightful fruit of love and labor.
